The Executive Chairman, Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Femi Majekodunmi has described school debate as one of the major tools in basic education that promotes critical thinking skills, creativity, and effective communication among learners.
Dr. Majekodunmi who said this in Abeokuta, during the State Final of the 2022 Basic Education Inter-Schools Debate Championship, noted that the competition would help build the confidence of learners, and boost their critical thinking among their peers.
He encouraged the learners to put in their best in the coming National competition and exchange ideas among themselves for better results.
The SUBEB boss expressed gratitude to the Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for providing a conducive environment for teaching and learning to thrive, adding that it had repositioned the education sector in the State.
Earlier in her remark, the Director, Academic and School Services, Mrs. Kehinde Anifowose said the characteristics of school debate include, informative function, arguments and persuasive capacity, among others, and were essential features needed for 21st-century basic education.
Speaking on behalf of the Egba winning team, Miss Deborah Bayo noted that the championship had given them more knowledge in the area of public speaking.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of gifts and medals to winners according to their positions; Egba Division came first, followed by Yewa Division with the second position, while Remo and Ijebu Divisions took third and fourth positions respectively.
