We’ve already been given a glimpse into Mikel Arteta’s outlandish ways of preparing Arsenal for matches and rest assured you’re about to see much more.
The Gunners boss revealed a heart condition he had as a child ahead of their clash against Norwich as a means of motivating the team with Arsenal yet to put a point on the board at the time.
You’ll also see Arteta getting the players to rub their hands together in a circle before their win at Leicester in October 2021.
But the build-up to their clash at Liverpool in November 2021 sees perhaps the most bizarre method from Pep Guardiola’s former assistant.
Arteta revealed how playing at Anfield made him ’emotional’ and recalled how in one match his football ability was effectively paralysed as Liverpool raced to a 4-0 lead inside 20 minutes against an Arsenal side that was top of the Premier League when it was played in February 2014.
Arsenal went into last season’s match unbeaten in their previous ten matches in all competitions, and they would’ve gone ahead of Liverpool with a win.
Arteta was determined to leave no stone unturned in preparation against an opponent that had given him so many bad memories.
The Amazon Prime documentary showed footage of Arsenal players playing a match at their training ground while Liverpool’s anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone was blared out on speakers that had been placed on the side of the pitch.
“I think we were all a little bit shocked when he put the music on,” new Gunners captain Martin Odegaard said.
“It just shows the way he is, he wants to prepare the team in the best possible way and he’s very creative. It was a nice and fun way to prepare for that atmosphere.
“Anfield can be the loudest stadium in the country to play away so I think it was a nice way to prepare the team.”
Arteta’s creativity had the desired effect as Arsenal stifled Liverpool’s attacking play and even had a few half chances of their own.
However, Arsenal found themselves a goal behind just before the break with Sadio Mane heading the Reds in front.
This came moments after Arteta had the mother of all arguments with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, the Spaniard feeling aggrieved at Mane’s earlier challenge on Takehiro Tomiyasu not getting the punishment he saw fit.
As Arteta and Klopp had their bust-up, the Liverpool crowd found their voice that had been silenced by Arsenal’s astute play earlier in the match.
The Merseysiders went on to win 4-0 and it was suggested the argument between the two managers tipped the balance of the match in the favour of the home side, with Rio Ferdinand saying during his analysis for BT Sport: “You don’t want to get that crowd gassed up.”
However, Arsenal defender Cedric Soares played down on any suggestion the clash between Arteta and Klopp was a pivotal moment.
When you’re there and coaching you’re living the emotions of the game.
“It’s part of the game and it will keep happening in football, I think it’s good. Everyone wants to win and it’s good for the sport.
“We were playing away from home so it’s normal for it to be a different atmosphere as to when you play at the Emirates.
Anfield is one of those stadiums where you know the crowd is going to be there, you need to be prepared for it. They like helping their team, which is normal.
“We as players have a job to do, we train all week but it’s always difficult as well.
“I think that moment, it’s sport and you can’t change it.”
