Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun says his administration is ready to partner with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), in mentoring and inculcating moral values in the youth for the development of the country.
Governor Abiodun stated this when he received the new State Director of the Corps, Mrs. Winifred Shopeka, accompanied by the outgone Director, Mrs. Belinda Faniyi, at the Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The Governor noted that it was imperative to teach youths the right moral values, to make them navigate the 21st-century exposure, taking into consideration the moral decadence that was prevalent in society nowadays.
"Consider us as partners in the process of mentoring our youths by teaching them to be morally upright and have the right skills to hold themselves in this competitive environment. We will also collaborate to teach them to interact with each other to tear down the layers of divisive tendencies which have continued to characterise our political landscape”, Abiodun pledged.
He said the new NYSC State boss is a round peg in a round hole with experience in youth development, adding that her antecedents in the previous postings and quest to re-orientate the youth on the right moral values were a welcome development.
The Governor also described the out-gone Director as a hard-working, persistent, deliberate, and determined personality who had demonstrated leadership capacity, commitment and passion for the job assigned to her.
Earlier, the out-gone Director of the Corps, Mrs. Faniyi intimated the Governor that the scheme had established a farm for the cultivation of cassava and plantain, while a fish pond and skill acquisition centre were also set up to train corps members to be self-reliant after their service year.
She appreciated the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration for its support in the last three years, as she called for the same hand of fellowship to her successor, saying a 100-bed hostel facility constructed by the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, would soon be commissioned.
In her remarks, the new State Director, NYSC, Mrs. Shopeka hinted that her focus would be on how to produce youths who would be agents of positive change and role models to the younger generation.
According to her, "during my time here, I will work towards producing youths who will be agents of positive change and role models to the ones coming behind. Character reformation is very important for a new Nigeria. We at the NYSC are focusing on skill acquisition to ensure that we prepare them for the future”.
