Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), says there is a need to review its Electoral Law, to address some grey areas and make it conform with the current law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Chairman, OGSIEC, Mr. Babatunde Osibodu made this known in Joga/Ibooro ward 5, Yewa North Local Government, during a sensitisation visit to traditional rulers of three communities in the area, on the forthcoming Councillorship Bye-election.
Osibodu said the review would focus on a situation where only one political party or candidate indicated an interest in a vacant post, which might not need voting, but an affirmation.
"We are going to amend our law to conform with that of Lagos State and even the Federal Government which stated that; where there is only one candidate that emerges, there won't be a need for voting, rather just an affirmation.
“This is not a normal election because only one party, that is, All Progressives Congress (APC) indicated an interest in the vacant post, despite informing other political parties of the commencement of the Bye-election process”, the Chairman stated.
Osibodu pointed out that the Bye-election became imperative due to the death of the Councillor representing the ward, Hon. Isiaka Ogundele, calling for the support of the traditional rulers in sensitising their subjects on what to expect on the election day, Thursday, July 14, 2022, saying, "the only candidate must score 50 percent of total vote cast before he can be declared winner of the election".
He added that the result of the election would be announced by the Commission, while a rerun (if unable to secure 50 percent) would be held on Thursday, July 22, 2022.
In their separate responses, the Abepa of Joga-Orile, Oba Adeyemi Adekeye, the Aboro of Iboro, Oba Daniel Salako and the Awujako of Ijako, Oba Matthew Ewedairo commended OGSIEC for its transparency, promising to give the necessary support, particularly in the area of security during the poll.
