Liverpool are currently in the midst of the pre-season schedule after recording a 2-0 win over Premier League rivals Crystal Palace on Friday.
The Reds saw Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah get on the scoresheet either side of half-time in Singapore as Jurgen Klopp’s side recorded their first victory of pre-season after losing 4-0 to Manchester United in Thailand on Tuesday afternoon.
Ahead of the new campaign, there has plenty of news surrounding Klopp’s men, who will be hoping to go one better from last season and win the Premier League title.
Mirror Sport has the latest news surrounding Liverpool, including claims made by former players and an injury update.
Former Liverpool and Spain striker Luis Garcia has claimed that summer signing Joao Carvalho can be the club’s next James Milner due to the teenager’s versatility. Carvalho joined the Reds earlier this window from Fulham after helping the Cottagers gain promotion back to the Premier League.
Speaking to LFCTV, the Spaniard, who played 122 games for the Reds between 2004 and 2007, has said that in his short time playing for Liverpool, he has already shown his capabilities of playing in multiple positions. “He’s one of those players who you can play in so many positions,” said Garcia. “We’ve seen Milner play in midfield, as a striker, almost as a goalkeeper and I think Carvalho is the same. We saw him almost in a full-back position and in the middle as we saw the other day.
He’s a player who with the ability he’s got and the speed he’s got, he can play in every position on the pitch. If you play him in the midfield onwards he’ll be even better because he has that ability to score."
Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has warned Klopp that he will need good luck to deal with Manchester City summer signing Erling Haaland this summer. Title-chasing rivals City and Liverpool both spent big on new strikers this summer, with the Sky Blues acquiring Haaland from Borussia Dortmund and the Reds spending big to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica.
Speaking about the duo ahead of the upcoming campaign, Lawrenson has warned Klopp and the rest of the league that they will need luck to stop last season’s title winners, who now have Haaland in their ranks.
Both Erling Haaland and Darwin Núñez are goal scorers but they’re both completely different players,” Lawrenson told Paddy Power (as published by the Daily Star ). “It shows that you don’t have to have a stereotypical player in that position. They can be different. As we saw with City last year, they won the league without a striker, and now they've got one of the world's best so good luck to everybody else.”
As well as Carvalho, Liverpool also completed the signing right-back Calvin Ramsey from Scottish side Aberdeen earlier this summer. However, the defender is not currently with Klopp and his side for their pre-season tour of Asia.
Speaking about the absence of Ramsey, who signed for Liverpool in a transfer worth £4.2million, Klopp explained that the defender will join-up with the first-team squad at some point, alongside goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. Although he is unsure when the defender will return from his short-term injury problem.
After beating Palace in a pre-season friendly, Klopp said: "No, no, no. They will join the group, of course. No doubt about that. The timeframe, I don’t know exactly. They will join the group. When? I don’t know.”
