Ogun State Government has said that necessary arrangements are at the advanced stage for the residents, including Public Servants to benefit maximally from its Health Insurance Scheme.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker revealed this in Abeokuta, at a diagnostic programme tagged “ Know Your Health Status”, held in commemoration of the year 2022 Public Service Day, stating that the Scheme is an all-encompassing package of healthcare meant to cater for the well-being of all and sundry in the State.
Coker pointed out that the State government had renovated Primary Health Centres, with necessary logistics and adequate personnel to provide the health insurance services, saying “ we have employed about 20 Doctors, while we still hope to get an additional 64 of them, towards ensuring that we have enough medical practitioners that will attend to the people”.
The Commissioner encouraged the Public Servants to take their health seriously and be conscious of what they consume, to prevent some avoidable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, obesity and hypertension.
Flagging off the programme, the Head of Service, Dr. Nafiu Aigoro said it is essential for the Public Servants to regularly go for a checkup, to ascertain their health and fitness and be productive in their beats.
Aigoro appreciated the present administration for the opportunity given to the Civil Servants to know their health status,
On his part, the Special Adviser on Health, Dr. Tayo Lawal said only healthy workers could contribute to the development of the State, hence the need for a constant checkup.
In her lecture titled, "Know Your Health Status, a Medical Doctor with Olikoye Ransome Kuti Memorial Hospital, Asero, Abeokuta, Dr. Mrs. Temitope Yomibo- Shofolahan emphasised on hypertension, diabetes and cancer as common ailments affecting the health of the people noted that full responsibility of individuals’ well-being should be a priority.
According to Sofolahan, “as a living being, we all have blood pressure and the normal level should be 140/90, when the pressure is above average or below that is when we can say it is hypertension or hypotension.
‘’Diabetes and high blood pressure often occur together. Both can damage blood vessels, and the heart that helps it pump, and can also accumulate bacteria. It is composed of different substances like cholesterol, fat and waste products".
Some of the Public Servants at the event, Mrs. Abiola Odu and Miss Mistura Junaid appreciated the State government for the opportunity, saying the gesture would help them maintain a healthy lifestyle.
