In realisation of its agricultural agenda of product development and marketing, Ogun State Government has partnered with a Federal Government agency, Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN), on value addition training for farmers and extension agents.
Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Adeola Odedina, revealed this in Abeokuta, during an engagement with representatives of the Institute, saying the present administration is deliberate in its partnership drive, to further empower youths and women on the cocoa value chain.
Odedina stated that his Ministry would ensure that the necessary skills for the production of varieties of items from the cocoa crop would be replicated across the State.
On his part, the Executive Director, CRIN, Dr. Patrick Adebowale, represented by the Assistant Director in the Institute, Dr. Eghosa Uwagboe said the agency is saddled with the responsibility of conducting research on Cocoa, Cashew, Coffee, Kola, and Tea as a means to enhance productivity, improve quality and value addition of the crops.
Adebowale revealed that the avenue would create awareness on the need to shift the focus from depending on cocoa produce alone for profit to the era of value addition among all cocoa farmers and stakeholders.
"We are showcasing products derived from cocoa beans such as bread, wine, garri, butter, chocolate, and many more. We are using this medium to enlighten farmers and stakeholders to go into value addition, in order to earn more revenue", he said.
