In fulfillment of its promise to operationalise the Ogere International Produce Market in Ogere-Remo, the Ogun State Government has approved the commencement of trading at the market for an initial period of six months, which ends in November 2022.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Olu. Ola. Aikulola made this known when he led an Inter-Ministerial delegation comprising officials of his Ministry, Ministries of Housing and Agriculture, as well as a representative of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Office on a tour of the market, saying the approval is to allow traders to sell their produce at a section of the market, while steps are taken to renovate the facility before it becomes fully operational.
Aikulola added that the step would aid the trading in Ogere and environs, and help in stemming the theft and destruction of facilities at the market.
‘’The government has taken this first step to allow traders to start selling at the market for a period of six months. Development that unfolds in the market during the six-month period will determine other actions that will be taken after. The government has not directed us to come and allocate shops to anyone. We will not tolerate anyone laying ownership to shops or stalls around the market during the period", Aikulola disclosed.
The Permanent Secretary noted that contrary to misleading reports, the government has not handed over the market to any party nor have stalls been allocated to traders, assuring that the present administration would continue to be inclusive in its implementation of strategies and policies toward improving the condition of the market.
Speaking on behalf of the market stakeholders, Deputy National President, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Prince Olusegun Dasaolu, lauded the government for fulfilling its promise on commencement of trading at the market, promising that all relevant stakeholders would work harmoniously to ensure the development of the market.
Others present at the meeting include, the Iyaloja of the Ogere, Chief (Mrs.) Adenike Bakare-Eniola, Prince Abiodun Ogunjimi and the General Secretary of the Oluwanisola Cattle Market, Alhaji Babalola Akeweje, among others
