OGSG, TRANSPORT UNIONS SET TO REGULATE ACTIVITIES OF COMMERCIAL MOTORCYCLISTS

To further ensure the security of lives and property of residents, Ogun State government and transport unions are set to issue identification registration documents and jackets to operators of commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as ‘Okada’ riders, along the corridors of the State.

This came to the fore at a security meeting in Abeokuta with stakeholders in the transportation sector, aimed at addressing the influx of ‘Okada’ riders into the State, due to their recent ban in Lagos State.

Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, emphasised the need for a proactive approach to regulating the activities of commercial motorcycle operators, noting that arrangements are in top gear to update the database of riders in order to prevent a breakdown of law and order among them.

“Registration exercise had commenced months back and all is set to provide numbered jackets with security fixtures, in order to identify riders who are duly registered with the State unions. On our part, we will set up a task force comprising of both the union and other security agencies that will make sure unregistered riders don’t operate within Ogun State corridor”, Dairo said.

On his part, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, AIG. Olushola Subair Rtd. said the riders' jacket was initiated by the State Security Council to distinguish every rider operating in the State, in order to curb every form of criminality and other social vices. He encouraged security operatives to put all hands on deck at making this achievable.

Responding, the State Chairman, Amalgamated Commercial Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), Comrade Kayode Sowunmi assured the State government of the union leaders’ cooperation with the government
