Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu has said the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration will continue to give relevant support to AIONIANS schools in the State to improve their performances during competitions.
Arigbabu said this in Abeokuta while receiving the State AIONIANS schools, namely, Abeokuta Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode Grammar School, Remo Secondary School, and Yewa College, Ilaro during the presentation of trophies won at the just concluded AIONIANS games held in Ondo.
The Commissioner noted that the government’s continued intervention in improving and sustaining education standards would ensure that learners in the State perform excellently well in their studies and competitions, saying the competition which included both academic and sporting games would help sharpen the mental and physical health of students.
“I want to appreciate you for surpassing last year’s victory, out of the 63 trophies available, Ogun State won 45, this is remarkable and it shows that the government’s investment in education is yielding the desired results. Your performance has given us the confidence to continue to support and encourage you”, he said.
In his remarks, the Principal of Abeokuta Grammar School, Mr. Dare Sorinola explained that the acronym AIONIANS was coined from the names of the five (5) competing states which were Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Oyo, and Ekiti, revealing that the game was started in 1930 to encourage healthy rivalry, good brotherhood among the states and schools.
Sorinola lauded the Governor for the support which led to the success recorded at the competition which took place at Manuwa Grammar School, Okiti-pupa, Ondo state.
