OGSG INAUGURATES TASK FORCE ON TRUANT LEARNERS ROAMING THE STREETS

 



Determined to nip all forms of social menace in the bud, the Ogun State government through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has inaugurated a task force to prevent learners from roaming the streets during school hours.


The Commissioner, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Funmilayo Efuwape who is the Chairman of the task force made this Known during the inaugural ceremony held at the Ministry's Conference Room, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.


Efuwape, represented by the Director of Rehabilitation Services, Mr. Kehinde Egbeolowo noted that it was disheartening to see a large number of school children roaming the streets during school hours, many of who are engaged in fighting, gambling and other vices harmful to society.


 "Let me remind the populace that it is the duty of the government as enshrined in the Civil Rights Law of Ogun State to protect the best interest of the child in all matters, it, therefore, becomes important to rescue these children from the streets", she said.


In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Melutia Ogunremi said the State is ready to caution, counsel and prosecute erring parents by serving yellow cards as a warning, with a stated fine on the first offender, after which a Red Card would be served, meaning such parents would be prosecuted at the family court.


She said the stakeholders which comprised of the Ministry, Security Agencies, Representatives from Child Protection Network, School Crime Prevention Team and Ministry of Education would be going to the streets frequently to rescue and monitor the activities of these children.


Ogunremi urged all stakeholders to join hands to work fully to achieve and deliver on the mandate.
