COOPERATE WITH GOVT TO ENSURE CLEANER ENVIRONMENT-OGUN SA

The Special Adviser to Ogun State Governor on Environment and Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, OGWAMA, Mr. Ola Oresanya has sought the cooperation of residents in the implementation of the ongoing waste management reforms in the State.

Mr. Oresanya stated this in Abeokuta during the State Waste Management Stakeholders meeting with Community Development Associations (CDAs), Central Development Councils (CDC), and Market Leaders in Abeokuta North and South Local Government Areas.

He noted that it was essential for households, commercial and industrial outlets in the State to make use of the waste receptacles placed at designated areas, urging them to patronise the Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for collection and proper disposal of their wastes.

“While many residents have complied with the ongoing waste management reforms which mandate households, commercial and industrial outlets in the State to patronise PSPs operators assigned to their areas for collection and proper disposal of their wastes for just a token, some unruly individuals are still unyielding despite several moral persuasion for them to comply”, he said.

The Special Adviser stressed the need for them to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse on roadsides, medians, waterways, and drainages, saying the government would commence massive statewide enforcement of its environmental law and prosecute offenders.

Oresanya enjoined market leaders to ensure cleanliness of market surroundings, saying the State government was not pleased closing down markets because of sanitation issues, however, it would not allow them to continue with their bad and illegal habits, especially the elites who dump their wastes indiscriminately.

Responding, the Chairman, Abeokuta Local Government CDC, Mr. Kazim Ajagunjeun praised the State government for its determination to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse in public places, encouraging residents to pay the government-approved waste managers promptly.
