The Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Hon. Tunji Akinosi has implored stakeholders in the forestry industry to cooperate with the government, in order to serve them better in the new year.
Akinosi made the call at a meeting in Abeokuta with the representatives of Timber contractors, Sawmillers and Charcoal sellers, saying an upward review would be made on revenue collected by the government.
He noted that the present administration would not condone any illegal activities in government’s forest reserves, particularly from individuals or groups who have not registered with government, warning registered contractors to desist from ‘unwholesome act’.
“Let me warn those carrying out illegal activities in our reserves to desist as the government will no longer fold its arms and watch them destroy our forests. Anybody caught will have to face the music”, he said.
The Commissioner revealed that officials of the Ministry accompanied by the men of the Nigerian army would soon embark on routine inspection of the afforestation areas in the three Senatorial Districts.
In his remark, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Lateef Benson appreciated the associations’ prompt response, assuring that their demands would be looked into.
Responding on behalf of the Sawmillers, Hon. Kunle Banjo pleaded with the government not to increase revenue beyond what they could afford, while a member of the Timber Contractor, Alhaja Ranti Ayobambi promised to continue to abide by the rules and regulations, which are geared towards improving the fortune of their businesses.
