The Prince Dapo Abiodun led administration in Ogun State has reaffirmed its commitment to keep using sporting activities to promote, empower and keep youths away from criminal activities, in order to put them on the right track.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Alhaji Waheed Odusile stated this in Abeokuta at the opening ceremony of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria's Week, Ogun State Chapter at the ASUSS
The Commissioner, who also doubled as the Chairman of the occasion enjoined journalists not to stunt their growth on specialised reporting in sports only, but to be versatile and spread their tentacles to other aspects of reporting.
Odusile called on the leadership of SWAN to do more on capacity building, enjoining it to go to the basis and discover talents from primary school pupils, through their writings, saying “with this, we will be able to build more sporting men”.
Speaking on the theme of the Week, tagged, “Quality Registration Towards a Sustainable Sports Policy in Nigeria”, the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oluomo, represented by Ogbeni Kola Ishola enjoined the Association to ‘catch them young’, adding that youth restiveness could be curbed by bringing back sporting activities to the grassroots.
The Chairman, Sport Writer Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State Chapter, Mr. Hakeem Akintunde, described sports as an integral part of the society, which has remained an important unifying factor all over the world, hence the need for policymakers to make legislations that would promote the sports sector.
