NBA PRESIDENT APPLAUDS OGUN INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT

The National President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Olumide Apata has applauded the Ogun State Government for the giant strides recorded in the area of good road network and other infrastructural development in the State.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Apata, attributed the feat to the private sector background of the governor who believe that governance should be pragmatic in finding solutions to people's problems.

"There is major improvement in infrastructure like roads. I am not a visitor to this state as I often come around. I know how the State was and how it is now. It is not only in the State capital, but other places like Ijebu-Ode are also experiencing improvement.

" I am not surprised for the governor's  proactive steps on governance. He is from the private sector and he believes that governance should be pragmatic aimed at providing solutions to the people. He is a great Ambassador of the private sector and I am very proud of him", he said.

Apata said report from its five branches in the State indicated that there is a synergy between the Bar and Bench in the State, opining that it is a good example to other states to follow.

He said the Bar Association was investigating issues of conflicting court orders from Judges and as also resolved to take any erring member to the  disciplinary Committee to determine their case.

While condemning the incessant attacks on the judiciary officers, the NBA President expressed support for the steps taken by the Judiciary Council, disclosing that the association would come out with its position after its quarterly meeting taking place in Abeokuta, the State capital.

Responding, the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, lauded the the association for upholding human rights and the tenets of good governance, saying it was in tandem with his administration's policy of fairness, equity and fair play.

The governor noted that a law that would ensure that judges who have served the state owns a home in a carefully designed estate exclusively designed for them, would soon be passed.

He said the law would ensure that the judges and their offsprings continue to leave in the houses allocated to them after their retirement adding that they would have the first right of refusal whenever the  houses are to be sold, stating that judges from the State High Court, the Appellate Courts as well as the Appeal and the Supreme Court, would benefit from the arrangement.

" We are doing everything to ensure that we give the Judiciary as much support as possible, we particularly passed at the Executive Council a memo that sought to ensure that we provide accommodation for all our judges from the State High Court to all the Appellate Courts, Appeal Court and the Supreme Court.

" We decided at the Executive Council to pass a law that stipulates that the state government will provide accommodation for the Judges, not just paying their rent. When they retired, its becomes theirs, of cause, unless when they want to to sell those houses," he said.

The state helmsman while commending the National Judicial Council for the role it played at ensuring that punitive measures were taken against judges that are fond of issuing counter injunctions and others, adding that such steps would definitely make the administration of justice more smooth.

Abiodun who also noted the cordial relationship between the Executive arm of government and the Judiciary, saying his administration would continue to give the Judiciary, which is a separate arm of government, all the support it needs to function effectively.
