Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has said that the current insecurity in the country would be reduce to the barest minimum, if more jobs are created and youth empowered.
Abiodun stated this in Lagos while declaring open the 2021 Capacity Building Workshop with the theme, "Internal Security Operations in a Democratic Dispensation”, organised by the Nigeria Police Force, Zone two Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos.
He described the workshop as a practical step to safety of lives and property, using collaboration to ensure all arms of security apparatus in Ogun and Lagos States are up to date with modern policing techniques.
The Governor added that the State based security agencies had been created to deal with peculiar challenges, as the Police could not handle the enormous security issues in all parts of the country.
"Insecurity is not just arming the Police and the Military. There is a nexus between insecurity, poverty, education, drug abuse and all other socio-economics indices. As much as it is good to equip the Police as we have done in Ogun State through the creation of the State Security Trust Fund, it is important to ensure that we look at the various interventions on how to reduce unemployment”, he said.
The State helmsman said security is part of the development of any society, urging concerned agencies to be friendly with the people, whose support is needed to effectively discharge their duties.
Also speaking, his Lagos State counterpart, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Folasade Jaji, stressed the need for cooperation between the people and security agencies, saying it would strengthen mutual relationship.
He urged participants to come up with ideas that would change the narrative in the society, as well as chart a course that would enable them work together as a team, stating that, "the people need the Police just as the Police need the people".
In his keynote address, the Inspection General of Police, Mr. Usman Alkali Baba, pointed out that the Police could not surmount security challenges alone without the support of other agencies including the media, charging officers to imbibe effective policing to protect human rights and ensure due process.
