In a bid to wipe out the menace of Pedophile attack on minors, the Ogun State Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has organized a one day public enlightenment campaign on Pedophile attack, by sensitising parents on the need to emphasize morals in the society.
The Hon. Commissioner of the ministry, Mrs Funmilayo Efuwape, while addressing the parents at the campaign at Ilaro Town Hall, Ilaro, explained that Pedophiles are people who are attracted to children.
Efuwape, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Melutia Ogunremi explained further that " though not all people with Pedophilia molest children, but they all have persistent sexual interest in prepubescent children as an evidence by an adult's sexual fantasies, and it is a wrong assumption that someone is not a Pedophile simply because he is nice or goes to church".
She added that adult sexual contact with an underage is a crime and is morally wrong, emphasising that the present administration would not look kindly on Pedophiles as well as child sexual assault perpetrators within the state.
In her own contribution, the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Melutia Ogunremi said that this campaign couldn't have come at a better time than this period, when there is a Sharp increase in the occurrence of Pedophile in the society.
She thereafter urged the parents to be at alert, sensitive to the environment, saying they should avoid collaboration with Pedophiles and members of their families.
The legal practitioner, who was invited to Sensitize the parents, Barrister Damola Lapite enjoined them to take proper care of their children, having a good relationship with them in order to educate them, giving them proper monitoring, thereby supporting the government to eradicate this criminal act.
Alhaji Saidi Ajibola, one of the parents at the campaign, appreciated the state government for sensitizating them at a time like this, promising on behalf of all that as parents, they would be more sensitive.
