There were multiple explosions at Kabul’s airport in Afghanistan on Thursday killing scores of US service members and Afghans, CNN reports.
According to reports, there were at least two explosions near the airport gate which led to the death of an unspecified number of persons.
CNN reports that the blasts came as the US and other countries were rushing to evacuate people ahead of President Joe Biden’s August 31 withdrawal deadline.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was briefed on the situation in Afghanistan by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin by phone today, her spokesperson Drew Hammill told CNN.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has also been briefed by the defense secretary on the situation, according to a statement from his office.
“I strongly condemn this act of terrorism and it must be clear to the world that the terrorists who perpetrated this will be sought and brought to justice,” Schumer said in the statement.
Recall that the country was recently plunged into chaos following the activities of the Taliban, who took over the country by capturing the nation’s capital, Kabul.
