OGSG DONATES RELIEF MATERIALS TO PEOPLE WITH SPINAL CORD INJURY

Ogun State Government has donated wheelchairs and medications to people living with Spinal Cord Injury, to mark this year's Spinal Cord Injury Day, just as they were assured of equity and inclusiveness.

 Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs, Olufunmilayo Efuwape made this known during the year 2020 Spinal Cord Injury celebration with the theme: COVID-19 and spinal cord injury: "staying well" at Women Development Centre, Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta.

Efuwape noted that the aim of observing the day was to increase awareness and understanding of spinal cord injury issues, as well as gains to be derived from the integration of people with spinal cord injury in every aspect of life.

According to the Commissioner, "having spinal cord injury is not the end of life, rather than becoming a liability to people around them, they can still showcase their God-given talent since no one is created empty", Efuwape said.

Contributing, Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, Hon, Adijat Adeleye said the present administration is committed to making life easier for the people with spinal cord injury, assuring them that their welfare is paramount to the government.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Melutia Ogunremi said the significance of the day was to give some relief materials to the less privileged among those living with spinal cord injury, to make them self-reliant and give them some sense of belonging.

"Though persons with spinal cord injury are more vulnerable than others as they were left to cope with severe complications and poor health outcomes. They are confronted with social challenges and this is why this year’s spinal cord injury day is on the prevention of COVID-19 for persons with spinal cord injury", Melutia said.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Miss Fatimah Aderounmu, expressed appreciation for the kind gestures, for giving them hope despite their state of health, emphasising that the materials would go a long way in making life easier.
