OGUN LAWMAKERS TASK OGIRS ON UP-TO-DATE DATABASE
The Ogun State House of Assembly has called for immediate upgrading of database of the State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) to effectively track prospective taxpayers, particularly those in the informal sector of the State’s economy with a view to generating more revenue to government coffers.
The House Committee on Finance and Appropriation made the call at its meeting with the management team of the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) at the Assembly’s complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Akanbi Bankole said the step had become imperative to enhance the performance of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the State especially the revenue generating ones towards improving government’s financial base in order for it to be able to provide more social amenities to the people.
He pointed out that the 7th and 8th Legislature was committed to sustaining the harmonious relationship that existed between it and the executive towards achieving a common goal of rebuilding the State.
Other members of the Committee including Hon. Adeyinka Mafe, Rasaq Oduntan, Jimi Otukoya charged the agency to step up measures at blocking revenue leakages, acknowledging that such proactive steps would assist government in executing its numerous projects across the State.
Responding, the Chairman of IRS, Mr. Kunle Adeosun, said the agency had put in place effective measures to block revenue leakages and had achieved increase in tax income to government coffers to the tune of over N2bn monthly.
Adeosun who decried poor tax culture in the nation, promised that the agency would embark on more enlightenment and enforcement programmes to ensure increased tax compliance in the State.
